Young Cancer Doctors Hit By Stress

A quarter of young cancer specialists in the UK are suffering from stress which can lead to depression and affect their care of patients and their families, researchers have found.
In a survey of 401 oncology registrars, 102 scored above the threshold for possible psychiatric morbidity and more than one in ten showed clinically important levels of depression.

The main reasons cited include being over-stretched, keeping up-to-date with knowledge, fear of making mistakes, talking with distressed relatives, and poor senior support and team relations.

The team was established to survey all the palliative medicine, medical oncology and clinical oncology registrars in the country - 63% of the UK’s cancer specialist registrars replied- with a questionnaire and a test for short-term changes in mental health.

They found 102 with levels of psychological distress, 44 had scores indicating depression and 15 expressed suicidal ideas. The study also found that the effect of stress on personal/family life was the dominant predictor of depression, which tallied with studies of other specialties. After their hardship and all the hard time to become a Doctor, our Doctors should not be facing certain symptoms or disorder. Who will think a doctor will be suffering form depression or stress? Some might think so, other may not. Unfortunately it happens in our daily lives. In a survey of Oncology registrar stated in this article from Science daily a web site related to Psychology and Science.
Our Doctors are facing all these stress because of their career, which they are all facing everyday at work with or without help. This study stated in this is it affecting us? Yes, because if we try to analyze or do a count of how this disorder may affect them and for the ration of Doctor to start disappearing. The picture will not be as we think it should. Finding the solution will be next resolution for this problem. If our Doctors are affected by this, we may call it infected as well will the populations from each states, then the universe.
If I go to a hospital, and I am having a surgery I would be more worry if I know that the doctor who is about to perform certain task on me, is having some stress or is suffering form depression. I am aware like it or not that everyone, some time in his or her life encounters with some type of depression or stress. Young or old this is one chapter in our lifetime that is not easy skip. We are all human, however; our Doctors are our Saviors on earth, and now if they are getting affected by these disorders we should be worried. Something should be done about this and done quickly.
If there is a way to take care of this issue, at the fastest paste as potential, the whole universe will benefit. There should be some further measures taken for a Doctor I think by given them some time apart form work and having more doctor in one section then there are already may make a change in the stress and depression or suicidal thoughts. It is ok as human to be depressing at some point in life, but while in the OR {Operating Room) I do not think it’s possible. If there is some kind of prescription for the doctor to be taken that will not affect heir task may this be available for our Doctors, Surgeons and other in thi8e field that is so much in need..
Last not least, it is just the analysis and I am hoping after some more research there will be an answer to this devastating news. As you have all done before had a problem and found the resolution for it. Let’s wait for the outcome of this situation.
